How to Donate
Bunch greens or bag small items (beans, cherry tomatoes) if possible; leave larger items loose. Clean off as much mud and dirt as possible and choose produce that has no signs of mold, spoilage, bruising or insects. Place in cooler during posted collection hours.
In addition to those protocols already in place for the use of community gardens, the following protocols will be implemented relative to the 2020 Produce Sharing Program:
Coolers will be washed, inside and outside, with soap and water before first use. Coolers will be wiped down weekly with water and a micro-fiber cloth, and then sprayed with an alcohol spray. Gardeners will be asked to wear gloves when opening and closing the cooler during use. An alcohol rubbing spray will be available at each cooler station to wipe down the coolers, cover and handles after a gardener puts produce in the cooler, and before transport. The coolers will be wiped down with water and the micro-fiber cloths before putting them away for the week. Volunteers transporting coolers or loose produce will wear gloves. Volunteers will follow protocols of the receiving pantries for social distancing, masks, etc.
Produce should be rinsed of loose soil and placed in the cooler loose or in clean plastic bags.
Ice packs will be washed in soap and water before first use. After frozen they will be placed in sealed gallon-sized zip lock bags to minimize contamination, and then placed in the coolers. The zip locked bags will be washed with water and a micro-fiber cloth and sprayed with the rubbing alcohol spray after each use. An alternate to ice packs will be weekly purchased bags of ice for each cooler.
McCormick (and at times Twiggs) gardens ice packs will be stored weekly in a small freezer outside of a nearby gardener’s house.
